Professional paint correction at Absolute Precision Custom Detailing currently starts at $699 for a sedan. Prices increase with vehicle size, reaching $925 for extra-large trucks, SUVs and off-road vehicles.
But vehicle size is only the starting point.
The condition of the paint, severity of the defects and amount of safe correction possible all affect the process. A newer vehicle with light wash marks is very different from an older black SUV covered in deep scratches, oxidation and hard-water etching.
That is why paint correction should begin with an evaluation – not a promise that every scratch will disappear.
Current Paint Correction Prices
Our current starting prices are:
| Vehicle size | Starting price |
|---|---|
| Sedan | $699 |
| SUV or mid-size truck | $775 |
| Three-row SUV, full-size truck or minivan | $850 |
| Extra-large truck, SUV, minivan or Wrangler-type vehicle | $925 |
The service generally requires approximately six to eight hours, depending on vehicle size and paint condition.
These are starting prices. A vehicle with severe defects, previous paint repairs or other complications may require additional evaluation before the appropriate process can be determined.
What Is Paint Correction?
Paint correction is a professional machine-polishing process used to reduce defects in a vehicle’s clear coat.
Those defects interrupt how light reflects from the surface, causing paint to look hazy, scratched or dull. By carefully refining a microscopic portion of the damaged clear coat, a detailer can create a smoother, more uniform surface that reflects light more clearly.
Correctable defects may include:
- Swirl marks
- Fine scratches
- Wash-induced marring
- Light oxidation
- Haze
- Buffer trails
- Some hard-water etching
- Some bird-dropping etching
- Paint transfer and scuffing
- Other correctable clear-coat imperfections
Paint correction does not add paint to the vehicle. It works with the paint and clear coat already present, which is why careful evaluation matters.

What Is Included in APC’s Paint Correction Service?
Our Paint Correction service includes more than polishing.
The paint must be properly cleaned and decontaminated before correction begins. Polishing a contaminated surface can drag embedded material across the paint and create additional defects.
The service includes:
- Thorough exterior washing and preparation
- Cleaning of door, trunk, hatch and gas-cap jambs
- Iron decontamination
- Hard-water-spot treatment on paint and glass
- Tree-sap and tar removal
- Clay treatment to remove bonded contamination
- Professional machine paint correction
- Gloss-enhancement polishing
- Detailed cleaning of tires, wheel faces, barrels and wheel wells
- Tire shine
- UV protection for exterior plastics
- Exterior glass and mirror cleaning
- SiO₂-infused wax offering up to four months of protection
The goal is a complete exterior refinement, not simply running a polisher over the paint.
How Much Improvement Should You Expect?
Our paint-correction process generally targets approximately 75% to 85% defect removal.
That range is intentional.
Removing every visible defect is not always safe or realistic. Some scratches extend too deeply into the clear coat, color coat or primer. Chasing those defects could remove more clear coat than is appropriate for the vehicle.
A responsible correction balances appearance with paint preservation. A deeper scratch may remain slightly visible if attempting to remove it completely would compromise the surrounding clear coat.
The result can still be a dramatic improvement in gloss, clarity and overall appearance without taking unnecessary risks.
Can Paint Correction Remove Scratches?
Paint correction can remove or reduce scratches that remain within the correctable portion of the clear coat. It cannot repair every scratch.
A scratch may be a good candidate for correction when:
- It is light or superficial
- It appears primarily under direct light
- It does not expose primer or bare metal
- It is actually surface scuffing or paint transfer
- There is enough healthy clear coat to polish safely
A scratch may require touch-up paint or body-shop repair when:
- It has penetrated through the clear coat
- The color coat is missing
- Primer or bare metal is visible
- The panel is dented
- The paint is cracked or peeling
- Clear-coat failure is already present
The common “fingernail test” can offer a clue: if a fingernail catches strongly in a scratch, it may be too deep for complete correction. But that test alone does not determine the appropriate process.
Lighting, paint condition and the surrounding surface must also be considered.
Paint Transfer Is Not Always a Deep Scratch
A white, black or colored streak across a bumper or door may look like severe damage. Sometimes it is material transferred from another object and sitting on top of the clear coat.
Paint transfer can occur after contact with:
- Another vehicle
- A painted post
- A garage wall
- A shopping cart
- A rubber barrier
- Road debris
Once the transferred material is safely removed, the original paint underneath may be in much better condition than expected. There may still be scratches or scuffing, but the damage cannot be accurately judged until the surface material is removed.
This is why photographs and an in-person evaluation are more useful than assuming every visible mark needs repainting.
What Affects Paint Correction Cost?
Vehicle size influences the price, but it is not the only factor.
Paint condition
A well-maintained vehicle with light swirl marks generally requires less corrective work than one with years of automatic-car-wash damage, oxidation or severe etching.
Defect depth
Light marring can often be improved more efficiently than deep, isolated scratches. Severe defects may require additional polishing, but some should not be pursued at all.
Vehicle shape
Large panels require more time, but so do complex body lines, narrow areas and intricate exterior features. Each area must be polished safely and consistently.
Paint hardness
Automotive paint systems vary. Some respond quickly to polishing, while others require different combinations of pads, products and technique to produce the desired finish.
Previous repairs
Repainted panels may behave differently from factory paint. Previous bodywork, sanding or aggressive polishing can also affect how much correction is safe.
Water spots and bonded contamination
Mineral deposits, iron particles, tree sap and tar must be addressed before polishing. Some water spots remain on the surface, while others have etched into the clear coat.
The desired result
A customer seeking a noticeable improvement for a daily driver may have different goals from someone preparing a classic, luxury or show vehicle. The appropriate level of correction should reflect how the vehicle is used and maintained.
Paint Correction vs. Gloss Enhancement
Not every vehicle needs full paint correction.
Absolute Precision Custom Detailing also offers a Gloss Enhancement Package starting at $425.
Gloss enhancement uses single-stage polishing to improve shine, color and clarity. It is intended for paint with light haze and minor imperfections when extensive defect removal is not the primary goal.
Current Gloss Enhancement starting prices are:
| Vehicle size | Starting price |
|---|---|
| Sedan | $425 |
| Two-row SUV or mid-size truck | $500 |
| Three-row SUV, full-size truck or minivan | $575 |
| Extra-large truck, SUV or off-road vehicle | $650 |
A simple way to think about the difference is:
- Gloss enhancement prioritizes shine, clarity and overall appearance.
- Paint correction prioritizes more substantial reduction of swirl marks and correctable defects.
The right choice depends on the current paint condition and the result you expect—not simply which package costs more.
Does a New Vehicle Need Paint Correction?
Possibly.
New vehicles can arrive with swirl marks, transportation film, water spots, dealership washing damage or polishing marks. “New” describes the vehicle’s age, not necessarily the condition of its paint.
However, a new vehicle should not automatically receive aggressive correction. If the paint only needs light refinement, gloss enhancement may be sufficient.
The surface should be inspected before choosing the service.
Do You Need Paint Correction Before Ceramic Coating?
Ceramic coating does not remove scratches. It protects and enhances the surface beneath it.
Applying a coating over swirl marks or haze can make those imperfections more noticeable because the coating increases gloss and reflectivity. That does not mean every vehicle needs maximum correction before coating, but the owner should understand what will remain visible.
The appropriate preparation may include:
- Decontamination without significant polishing
- Gloss enhancement
- Paint correction
- More specialized work for isolated defects
The decision depends on the paint’s condition, the coating selected, the owner’s expectations and how much clear coat can be safely refined.
Absolute Precision Custom Detailing offers one-, three- and five-year ceramic-coating options. Our five-year package includes gloss-enhancement polishing as part of its preparation.

Is Paint Correction Permanent?
The defects physically removed through correction do not simply reappear. However, new swirl marks and scratches can be introduced afterward.
Common causes include:
- Automatic car washes
- Dirty wash mitts or towels
- Improper drying
- Wiping dust from dry paint
- Harsh brushes
- Poor polishing techniques
- Improper snow or ice removal
- Everyday contact with branches, clothing or equipment
Proper washing and drying practices help preserve the corrected finish. SiO₂ protection, ceramic coating or another appropriate protective product can make maintenance easier, but no coating makes paint scratch-proof.
Is Paint Correction Worth the Cost?
Paint correction makes the most sense when the vehicle’s paint is fundamentally sound but its appearance is being diminished by correctable defects.
It may be worthwhile when:
- Swirl marks are obvious in sunlight
- Dark paint looks gray or hazy
- Automatic washing has dulled the finish
- The vehicle is being prepared for ceramic coating
- You are restoring a classic or specialty vehicle
- You want to improve appearance before selling
- You plan to keep the vehicle and maintain it properly
It may not be the right investment when the paint has widespread clear-coat failure, extensive peeling or damage requiring repainting.
An honest evaluation should identify what polishing can improve before you commit to the service.
Why Training Matters
Paint correction permanently changes the surface of the clear coat. It requires judgment, controlled technique and an understanding of how different paint systems respond.
